Map of Military Bases in Alabama
Fort Rucker
This Army base in Alabama is named after Confederate General Edmund Rucker, is located in Dale County and was officially opened in 1942. Army Aviation uses this base as its primary site for flight training, and Fort Rucker is also where the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence is located. You can enter the post from any one of its three bordering cities: Ozark, Daleville, and Enterprise.
To support the training camp, over 1,200 acres of land were acquired to construct an airfield that came to be known as Ozark Army Airfield until the name changed more than a decade later to Cairns Army Airfield. The first division to train at Camp Rucker left soon after their arrival to fight in the Pacific Theater in 1943. The post was deactivated and reactivated twice in the following decade but was eventually established as a helicopter training base and renamed Fort Rucker.
Redstone Arsenal
This Redston Arsenal is one of Alabama military bases with a unique history built In 1941 and 1942. The Redstone Arsenal has three separate units controlled by the U.S. Army called Huntsville Arsenal (which manufactured chemicals), the Huntsville Chemical Warfare Depot (which stored chemicals and munitions), and the Redstone Ordnance Plant (which manufactured munitions). Redstone Arsenal has four major zones that each include different base functions: residential, city center, professional, and industrial. The base sits on about 38,100 acres of land, over 25,000 of which is used as a test area and 3,000 of which is still buildable.
Over the next decade, the arsenal grew into the rocketry and missile center for the Army, and it soon played a major role in launching Explorer I, the first satellite to come from America, into space. In fact, design for space launch vehicles occurred primarily at Redstone up into the 60s. Today, the arsenal still operates to develop and test missiles for the Army’s missile programs.
Maxwell Air Force Base
The Maxwell-Gunter AFB is under the control of the Air Education and Training Command of the U.S. Air Force. A second installation, which went through several name changes from Gunter Field to Gunter Air Force Station to (finally) Gunter Air Force Base, was consolidated with Maxwell AFB in 1992 to create the combined installation. The base is located in Montgomery and was named after Lieutenant William C. Maxwell. The first Wright Flying School used to be located where the base now stands, but the spirit of education never left since this AFB is now the Air University headquarters which is the U.S. Air Force’s postgraduate academy.
Coast Guard Station
One Coast Guard Station in Alabama, called the Aviation Training Center (ATC), was built in the 1960s. The ATC’s mission is to develop aviation capabilities and aircrews that are mission ready. In fact, the ATC is the aviation capabilities center for the entire Coast Guard. The Gulf Strike Team of the Coast Guard’s National Strike Force is also located here.
