There has always seemed to be this age-old question and competition of what is the difference between Army and Marines and who is better? So, let’s try to answer it.
Understanding the Difference Between Army and Marines
The following is my personal opinion of the difference between Army and Marines.
PTO
Well this starts on day one for each branch in boot camp: physical fitness. I have to give the nod here to the Marines. Their PT is somewhat more demanding, and from what I see, they spend a little more time in the gym than Army service members. It seems that for the Army, who spends more time in the gym depends on the MOS. Most of the Army personnel in the gym are combat MOS, but for the Marines, most everybody is in the gym. Way to go Marines! Keep it up and raise the bar high.
Mental Aptitude
Both branches are mentally challenging. I am, however, going to give this cookie to the Army. Their standards are set very high at the academy. For NCOs, higher learning and advanced MOS schools include everything from pilots to cyber technology. Of course, both the Army and the Marine Corps are highly intelligent branches and have some of the most intelligent members of any branch.
Combat Teams
Ok, let’s get at this. The Army wins this by far. Why? One word: Ranger. I won’t even go into the elite infantry divisions—82nd or 10th mountain and more. The Army led the way in Iraq and led the way in Afghanistan. I guess it was our turn after what the Marines have done throughout history, and yes, they defeated and took over Fallujah.
NCO
When it comes to NCOs, this is a tie. Both branches are led by the NCO—something none of the other branches can say. The importance of the NCO leadership is tremendous for both branches. The NCO is and always will be the backbone of each branch.
The Uniform
This another tie. Why? The Army wins with the camo and the Marines win, of course above and beyond any branch, with their dress uniform. I do give the nod to the Army when it comes to boots because I feel sorry for the Marines wearing their heavy boots.
The Apache
Okay, we all know the Army gets the cookie for its helicopter pilots and the job they did in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The history of the Marine pilots has been such a great asset, but it just seems that the Army has provided more.
EOD
I had to keep this for last. The Army leads in this area and blows it away with the Army EOD. It is swiftly taking over and leading the way in all EOD operations. The Navy is still the leader because of its EOD being more special operations. The job the Army EOD has done in OEF and OIF has accounted for saving thousands of lives and many more.
Whether You Army or Marines We Are All Brothers and Sisters
I will not sit here and type and upset anybody by saying who is the best overall. It is too hard and ridiculous to make that decision. Even the president wouldn’t dare to make it. We are all the same—we serve our nation proudly. I have had the pleasure of serving with Marines at Camp Dwyer and Leatherneck and I must say it was an honor and always will be to serve with each of you. The Army is the best wife I’ve ever had—loyal, honest, and trustworthy. I will always be grateful for being able to serve my country in the Army and will fight hard to always stay. We all share the same pride, honor, courage, and commitment to our country. We will never quit and never accept defeat. Semper Fi and Hooah.
