The military pay chart is a helpful tool for military personel. Like most other occupations in the country, military service members do receive pay, and this is a huge point of interest for many people who are considering joining the military. These individuals need to know whether their pay will adequately cover cost of living and other expenses. Is this enough to live on? Is the pay worth the on-the-job risk? Is the pay better in one branch versus another? No one can deny that our military service members are extremely selfless and brave to do the work they do, but pay is still extremely important. You can easily see the exact numbers by looking at any military pay chart.
The Basics of The Military Pay Chart
Basic pay is the wage that each service member is paid bimonthly. On the 1st and 15th of the month, pay is distributed according to a member’s amount of service time and military rank. And this is how the military pay chart is organized. Each branch uses the same rank codes even if their titles are vastly different. That means that the lowest enlisted service member in the Army will get paid the same amount as the lowest enlisted service member in the Air Force. But it’s important to realize that rank and service time are not the only factors that affect a person’s military pay.
Factors that Affect Military Pay:
- Promotions
- Annual pay raise
- Number of drill periods a Guard or Reservists has attended
- Basic Allowance for Subsistence Increases (BAS)
- Basic Allowance for Housing Increases (BAH)
- Cost of Living Allowance Increases (COLA)
- Special Pay based on occupation
Retirement Pay
Those who’ve served in the military are not only paid when they serve. Many veterans also receive retirement pay after 20 or more years of service if they qualify.
There are four separate retirement plans: Final Pay, High-36, CBS/REDUX, and Disability. The retired military pay chart organizes pay according to retirement plan, basis, multiplier, COLA, readjustment, and bonus. These categories outline the differences between the retirement plans. For example, High-36 and CBS/REDUX have the same basis of “average of highest 36 months of basic pay.” But then the High-36 multiplies 2.5 percent every year served while the CBS/REDUX works slightly different by deducting 1 percentage point for every year under 30 years of service.
Military Disability Pay Chart
Veterans also receive monetary compensation from the military if they are disabled due to a service-related injury. The amount they are compensated changes based on their percentage of disability and how many dependents the veteran has at home. For example, a veteran who is 50 percent disabled and has a dependent spouse and child at home would receive more compensation than a veteran who is 50 percent disabled with only a dependent child. VA disability benefits are also not taxable, so this compensation should not be included on income tax statements as gross income.
Benefits Include More than Money
Serving in the military requires a lot of selfless sacrifice and as such, those who serve and have served in the military are often eligible for benefits beyond a salary. Just one example is VA home loans. Because of your service, you qualify to finance your home with a VA purchase or refinance loan. These include extremely low interest rates, no mandatory down payments, and very flexible requirements. At Low VA Rates, we work hard every day to give affordable home loans to as many veterans as possible. Through the VA loan program, veterans end up saving hundreds or thousands of dollars on their mortgages, and this means they can feel security and peace in their homes.
