The United States Coast Guard Ethos is a testament of courage and dedication. When it comes to the military, we seem to forget that our first line of defense is right here at home protecting our borders, north, south, east, and west. The men and women of the Coast Guard are some of the best trained, most knowledgeable, and most dedicated members of the United States military. They may not spend a lot of time overseas, but their mission is of great importance and is very dangerous. When was the last time a marine, airman, soldier, or seaman went out in a hurricane? Or chased down a speed boat full of illegal drugs and weapons? The mission of the Coast Guard is widespread, and as “Coasties,” they perform it daily in snow, rain, sleet, hail, high water, and bright sunshine. They do it with pride and commitment. They may not fight a war overseas, but they keep the war from coming to us. We have many different enemies. The Coast Guard and its responsibility to homeland defense is one of the most important missions and responsibilities of the United States military. Their core values and ethos are similar to other branches of the military.
The Coast Guard Ethos is as follows:
The Coast Guardsman
“I am a Coast Guardsman.” Coast Guardsmen spend as much time training as any other military member. They are dedicated and committed to the values of the Coast Guard. They will spend hours and days completing search-and-rescue operations. They will spend months helping to clean up after a hurricane or natural disaster.
Service
“I serve the people of the United States.” They serve the people of the United States and the American way of life. They support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.
Commitment
“I will protect them. I will defend them. I will save them.” They are all committed to protecting and saving the people of the United States. This doesn’t mean just in battle. Coast Guardsmen risk their lives on a daily basis trying to rescue people in ships, boats, plane crashes, and helicopter crashes. They risk their lives to prevent illegal aliens from entering the United States. They risk their lives preventing known and unknown drug and illegal weapons transport. They board boats not knowing what dangers may face them once they are aboard. They are our shield. They are our first line of defense in many different situations.
Semper Paratus
What does Semper Paratus mean? It’s the Coast Guard way of life. It means “always prepared,” and they truly are for any fight, for any enemy, and for any emergency. The men and women of the Coast Guard live the Coast Guard values. They are proud of what they do. They are proud to call themselves Coast Guardsmen. They are the Coast Guard. They protect us during an emergency. They shield us from illegal activity. They rescue us during a storm. They are all military service members and veterans of protecting freedom.
A Big Thank You to Our Coast Guard
To all the Coasties, we owe you and give you our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your service to our country. To the Coast Guard veterans, we say the same. You are true professionals and heroes. Thank you for all that you do, have done, and will do to protect our freedom home and away. Semper Paratus!
