The future of our military lays in the hands of technology that changes daily. There was a time in the past when the military relied more on people than on technology. It was the same case in the civilian world. However, that time has come and gone. The military now relies heavily on technology. The problem with military technology is that it constantly changes and there is a higher cost associated with training military personnel on new technology. This can be very frustrating for everyone at times because with technology comes issues with that technology breaking down.
You still have to train as you fight every day. There are backups for backups. The United States military obviously leads the way in technology. However, we invest more money in the technology than in the people running it. There are many jobs in the civilian world that will pay more for technicians than the military will. So, the military is starting to have a huge problem with people leaving the military after just a few years. People join the military to get education, knowledge, and experience about and with the equipment and then leave the military for higher-paying civilian jobs. There is really no simple way to solve this problem because the military will never be able to pay the same as civilian companies will.
Military Vehicles
One of the biggest changes in the military in technology has been with the new and improved military vehicles. These changes pretty much began to take place after OIF/OEF started. The military relies heavily on computer technology, especially when it comes to communication. The weapons used in military vehicles are even run by computer technology, and this becomes a problem when it breaks down. I can’t go in depth here for security reasons, but anybody who has spent time in the military and has used the “crows” system knows what I am talking about.
The computers in military vehicles are always an issue because one minute they’re working and the next, they’re not. You might prepare your vehicle for a mission the night before and then realize the next morning when you’re getting ready to go that it’s not working. The computer ghost gets in the trucks and takes over. Then you have to have the communications people come to fix it. This is why you train and start preparing for a mission hours before. The technology can sometimes be a trap. I will say the communications systems are far better now than they were before and they are constantly improving.
Military Drones
Military drones also known as UAV’s (unmanned aerial vehicles). The use of the UAV has become quite an asset for the military. Its ability to collect intelligence information has helped in defeating the enemy. Its greatest purpose has been the safety of military personnel. With the UAV, we can hit a target without even having a military member on the ground or in any type of danger.
There are many different types of UAVs. There are drones and unmanned observation air crafts, just to name a couple. UAVs have helped defeat the enemy as well as save military and civilian lives. The UAV can get into areas that would be nearly impossible to get military people into without putting them into danger. The UAV will continue to be one of our greatest technology assets.
Robots
In my MOS EOD, we have utilized robots for years to aid in our job whether it be to find an IED, disarm one, or destroy it. The use of robots have saved many EOD lives. We can put a robot into a building and find an IED without ever putting a soldier in danger. The robot can and will always be one of the best assets that EOD uses.
Our military technology will continue to make the U.S. military the best military in the world. The use of technology saves lives and prevents military personnel from being put into harm’s way. Our military becomes stronger every day, and it is time to pay the ones that run it so we can keep them as well.
