The subject of women in combat is still one of mixed opinion. There are a lot of people out there (and not just men) that still believe women do not belong in combat MOS. I have to ask, why? Is there a specific reason? Maybe it’s because women have been put in military occupations that do not give them an opportunity to prove themselves since the beginning. What is the true reason? The military says that they are all about equal opportunity and yet we continue to have different standards for males and females. The U.S. military even has different age standards. Is it equal opportunity when they won’t select an older soldier for special forces? It is time to change and have one requirement for everyone, and the main reason why is simple; there is not an enemy out there that cares about your age or gender. Do you think terrorists care that you’re 21 or 54, a male or a female, when they set an IED?
Why Not
Why not have women in the infantry or combat arms MOS? I have seen many military and civilian females that could be as good as or even a lot better than some of the males in combat MOS. It doesn’t matter if you are 6’6” or 5’2”. If you can do the job and meet the requirements, why not? This is exactly why there should only be one standardized requirement in boot camp. The same standardized requirement based on the MOS, not age or gender. We all shoot the M4 at qualifications and that is what we use in combat. There is no different standard for weapons qualification; no matter what weapon you qualify with, it takes the same skills to qualify for expert no matter what your gender is. Many females can do the same job just as effectively as males! The only way to really change public opinion is to give every gender the same opportunities. You never know until you try it!
Public Opinion
One of the many reasons that the military has always kept females from being in combat MOS is the public opinion of what they can do and whether they can be effective in defending our country from our enemies. The other reason is that the public seems to think it’s worse if a female is killed in combat than a male. Why? They’re both still Americans fighting the same fight—defending freedom! The public opinion should have nothing to do with women in combat. There are female firefighters out there every day fighting fires just as there are females in law enforcement, border patrol, FBI, CIA, secret service, etc. There is no longer a real reason nor should there have ever been one to keep women from being in a combat MOS and fighting for freedom the same as men do.
Give Them More Than a Chance
It is time to give females the same opportunities in combat MOS as males, no matter the MOS. Let them prove history wrong by providing them the same equal opportunities as males. This will actually make our military stronger and less vulnerable against our enemies because at the end of the day, what is most important is the ability of a male or female to be effective in combat! The females of our military have earned the right to the same opportunities as males. And they will prove they belong and they’ll fight for our country and defend freedom with the same opportunities as males.
