Map of Military Bases in Missouri
Camp Clark
Camp Clark, located in Nevada, Missouri, was established in 1908 as an Army National Guard Training Site. Named after General Harvey C. Clark, Camp Clark was an assembly point for soldiers stationed in Central America during the Mexican Border War and World War I. During World War II, Camp Clark was used as a prisoner-of-war camp and housed German and Italian prisoners.
Today, Camp Clark is the home of a program for high school dropouts, sponsored by the National Guard. For five months, students participate in an intensive training to increase self-esteem, work ethic, and discipline. Public access to Camp Clark is limited, however, hunters can obtain permits to hunt quail and deer on the base during hunting season.
Fort Leonard Wood
Fort Leonard Wood, named after General Leonard Wood, is an Army base that opened in 1940. It was an engineer training post and became the home of the Engineer Replacement Training Center. Like Camp Clark, the fort was used as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II.
When Fort McClellan, located in Alabama, was decommissioned in 1999, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and Military Police Corps schools were moved to Fort Leonard Wood. Both schools still operate there today.
Whiteman Air Force Base
Whiteman Air Force Base opened in 1942 and was named after Second Lieutenant George Allison Whiteman who died in aerial combat during World War II. When the Air Force Base was first established, it was the home of the Sedalia Army Airfield and was used as a training center for pilots flying WACO gliders.
In 1961, Whiteman Air Force Base became the fourth Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Center and was set up as a measure to protect the United States from potential attacks from Soviet missiles. Among its many uses today, Whiteman Air Force Base is currently used as a ground control station for aerial drones.
