Camp Ethan Allen Training Site
Vermont has just one Army base in the whole state, but this base provides elite training unlike anywhere else in the nation. This base is known as Camp Ethan Allen Training Site in Jericho, Vermont. It was named for Ethan Allen, a man of the Revolutionary War era who played a significant role in the history of both Vermont and the greater United States by campaigning for Vermont’s statehood and leading a band known as the “Green Mountain Boys.” To this day, he is still well-known in Vermont, and many consider him an American patriot. As a camp that teaches soldiers determination and fortitude, there’s no wondering why Ethan Allen is this base’s namesake.
One reason for Camp Ethan Allen’s significance is that it is home to the Army Mountain Warfare School or AMWS. The graduates of this school undergo an intense four-week training program that pushes both physical and mental capacities to the max. This four-week program is broken up into two two-week courses, one of which takes place in the summer, and the other in the winter. Soldiers learn everything from rock climbing and rope tying to river navigation and cold weather conditioning. They train for long hours each day, and sometimes into the night so they can learn how to navigate mountainous terrain in the dark. Together, both the summer and winter courses teach participants a variety of skills necessary for tactical mountain warfare and survival.
After completing AMWS, graduates receive the Ram’s Head Device, which is a special skills badge offered exclusively through the training program of this school. Graduates are also recognized as SQI-E, Military Mountaineers. The benefits of their training extend beyond our borders. Graduates from this program have gone on to help soldiers of other nations with the expert knowledge they gained in AMWS. In both 2005 and 2009, American soldiers who had completed the school’s program were sent to Afghanistan to share their knowledge and train other Afghani soldiers so they could use these skills in their own fight for freedom.
Camp Ethan Allen is also known for its firing range. Ethan Allen Firing Range is an 11,000-acre area which provides one of the best spaces to train with ammunition and test new weapons and systems. With 17 different testing areas and years of experience, Ethan Allen Firing Range prides itself on a perfect safety record. With all this camp as to offer and the superior manner in which its training and functions are carried out, that pride is well-deserved. This Army base certainly does its part in preparing to maintain America’s reputation as a strong military country.
Coast Guard of Vermont
Vermont is home to a Coast Guard station in Burlington, which is part of the First Coast Guard District. This station was established in 1948 and was originally only intended to be opened seasonally. Yet after the increase of commercial boating in surrounding areas of Lake Champlain, the Burlington Coast Guard station extended its hours. It is now opened all day every day, providing constant protection and service.
