There is a very long list of military bases in Texas, but a few are more famous than others. All in all, there are Army, Air Force, and Navy bases located here that give a lot of support to the military.

Texas Army Bases
Fort Hood Army Base is the largest active-duty Army post in the U.S. Originally, it was designed to train and test the tank destroyers that were used in WWII against Germany. After this, the base has primarily been used to train artillery troops and ground infantry. It has also played a major role in several wars and is a testing ground for new weapons, equipment, and procedures. In the past decade, Fort Hood has seen its share of tragedy with the Ft. Hood shooter. If you’re heading that way, check out this story and other Fort Hood news.
The city of Killeen, where this installation is located, has a lot to offer. The Central Texas State Fair, Belton Lake, Stillhouse Lake, a planetarium, a rodeo, and many other sites. Although this is a pretty laid-back town, you don’t have to worry about being bored in your free time here. There are also several schools in the area that have great reputations, and there are many housing options. Most members aren’t required to live on base, and the housing office will help you and your family find a suitable place to live. For these other homes, you can get a loan through the VA that offers a long list of benefits and lower rates.
This is one of the oldest military Bases in Texas. The U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center is located here and is the largest of its kind. Fort Bliss uniquely sits in two states—Texas and New Mexico—and only about 10 percent of it lies in Texas in the city of El Paso.
El Paso is dry and hot, but life here is safe and friendly. You’ll find a golf course, water park, and zoo here. It features some of the best school systems in the state. The housing market here flourishes since people are frequently coming and going. You’ll find a majority of military families live in the northeast part of El Paso as well as on the west side.
Texas Air Force Bases
There are 7 air bases in Texas and some of the biggest are Dyess, Laughlin, and Sheppard.
The Laughlin Air Force Base is located right outside of Del Rio, Texas. It has one of the first and most active training wings for pilots in the world. About 300 students graduate each year from the program here. In fact, this is the largest pilot-training military base in the Air Force. As far as interesting facts go, those stationed at this base were the first to take pictures of the missiles off of Cuba at the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Like many other bases, Laughlin’s housing office will welcome you warmly to the area and help you find a house you can call home whether it’s on or off site. While in Del Rio, don’t forget to take a small trip to the amazing Rio Grande that is just next door.
Sheppard Air Force Base is the largest general Air-Force training base in the country. Here they do basic and advanced flying training, technical training, and glider mechanic training as well as a few other programs, which make this site very diverse. It’s located in Wichita Falls, which features a tight community and many local restaurants.
Texas Navy Bases
This installation is one of 4 Navy bases in Texas and is located in Fort Worth. This reserve post doesn’t just house the Navy. The Marine Corps, the Air National Guard, the Air Force Reserve, and the Army Reserve also use the facilities here. In fact, it was the first U.S. Joint Service Reserve Base. A lot of training goes on here for ground support and air crews.
There are many more military bases in Texas beyond the few I’ve listed here. In fact, there are about 21 in total, making Texas a hot spot for those in the military and their families. If you are being stationed anywhere in this diverse state, you can look forward to that Texan hospitality that you will never want to leave behind.
