Below is a list of military bases in New York state and a brief description of their history other interesting information.
Fort Drum
Fort Drum is an Army installation military base located on over 107,000 acres in Jefferson County, New York. The base was originally called Pine Camp when it was built in 1908. At that time, it was used as a training facility for around 10,000 soldiers. In 1935, the site hosted the largest peacetime maneuvers exercises, which over 36,000 troops attended. Activity boomed with the beginning of WWII, and the Army added on 100 tracts of land to the base. Also during this time, the base served as a German and Italian soldiers’ prisoner-of-war camp.
In 1951, the base’s name was changed to Fort Drum after Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum. Throughout wars in the following decades, activity at Fort Drum peaked, and starting in 1959, it was the first location to test Agent Orange. Over 1,000 acres were sprayed with the chemical, and several surrounding communities were negatively affected. Today the 10th Mountain Division calls Fort Drum its home, and the fort provides mobilization and training support for around 80,000 soldiers every year.
Fort Hamilton
Fort Hamiltion is an Army base located in Brooklyn (a borough of New York City) and provides military support for the U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. The cornerstone for the base was placed in 1825, but the fort was not named after Alexander Hamilton for several more decades. The fort has seen many important faces throughout its life including Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Throughout the Civil War, the fort was used to defend the coast against raiders and other threats.
Today Fort Hamilton hosts the Military Entrance Processing Station, the NYC Recruiting Battalion, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ headquarters for the North Atlantic Division, among other units.
NSA Saratoga Springs
Naval Support Activity Saratoga Springs primarily serves as support for the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit. Its active-duty population sits around 3,000. The original Navy Installation was created in 1974 in Scotia, NY, and was called the NAU Scotia. After a few years of outstanding service, the installation was moved to Saratoga Springs and renamed. The base includes most NSA functions and is a fully active.
Sands Point Seaplane Base (Port Washington)
Another military base in New York is Port Washington. Port Washington is located on Long Island’s North Shore in Nassau County, New York. In the 1870s, the area was used primarily for sand mining. This sand would be used to make concrete that was used in skyscrapers around New York City. The military base Sands Point Seaplane wasn’t established here until the early 1900s. It is used as a landing area for seaplanes, and during the 30s, it was the state’s main base for the Boeing 314, which was also known as the Yankee Clipper.
Coast Guard Stations in New York
There are 8 active Coast Guard stations in New York. One location, Station Montauk, was opened in 1955 and is a law enforcement and search-and-rescue unit that protects the area around Long Island and Long Island Sound. Throughout the 20th century, almost all the Coast Guard stations along Long Island had been closed down, but Station Montauk remained. Another Coast Guard station, called Station Eatons Neck, sits on the north tip of Long Island. Eatons Neck Lighthouse is located here and is the 6th oldest lighthouse in the U.S.
